Label-reading lesson
Five parts of a dog-food label owners often overlook
The ingredient list matters, but it is only one part of the package. These five sections provide a more complete, repeatable way to review a dog food.
1. Exact product identity and intended species
Record the complete product name and confirm that the label identifies dogs as the intended species. A picture alone is not the species statement.
2. Nutritional adequacy statement
Copy the full statement, including the species and life stage. It helps distinguish a complete and balanced food from a treat, supplement, topper, or intermittent-feeding product.
3. Guaranteed analysis—with moisture in mind
The guaranteed analysis reports stated minimums and maximums on an as-fed basis. Foods with substantially different moisture levels cannot be compared fairly from those percentages alone. See the comparison guide before comparing wet and dry products.
4. Calorie content and feeding directions
Record calories per kilogram and per familiar unit, then review the feeding directions as a starting point. Include treats and other foods when looking at the complete daily intake.
5. Manufacturer or distributor information
Know which company is responsible for the product and how to contact it. Keep the lot code, best-by information, and clear label photos when asking a product question.
