Understand the ingredient list without turning it into a score

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. The list identifies what is present, but it does not disclose the exact amount of each ingredient or, by itself, establish the finished food’s nutrient balance, digestibility, manufacturing controls, or suitability for an individual pet.

Useful questions

  • Is there an ingredient you need to discuss with a veterinarian?
  • Does the product name accurately describe the ingredients?
  • Can the company explain an unfamiliar ingredient and its purpose?
  • What does the complete nutrient and adequacy information say about the finished food?

Educational note: This information is general education, not veterinary advice. A veterinarian should help with symptoms, diagnosed conditions, medication, therapeutic diets, suspected food reactions, or individualized feeding needs.
